Does Shroom and Gloom support a controller?
Yes: controller support was added for the Steam Early Access release. Team Lazerbeam confirmed on September 13, 2026 that players could use a controller and asked for feedback on the implementation. The same reply identified rough edges in map hover and inspecting signs on exploration doors.
Working input, the supported device list and a platform verification badge are different claims. The developer’s statement establishes that the feature exists. It does not establish a tested button layout for every controller or a performance guarantee for a handheld computer.
Why does the Demo behave differently?
The developer explained that the Demo had been built before native controller implementation was finished in the last weeks before Early Access. That accounts for older trial reports describing mouse-style interaction even though the paid launch announcement includes controller support.
Confirm the product in your Steam library before changing a layout. The Demo is App ID 3602770 and the paid release is App ID 3271280. An update to one should not be assumed to update the other. This is a dated explanation of the older Demo, not a claim about every future trial build.

Map hover and door inspection had known limitations
In the September 13 developer reply, the controller could open the map, but could not hover over tunnels and rewards. Inspecting signs on exploration doors was also described as awkward. Those statements identify specific historical limitations; they are different from all controller input failing to register.
If one of those actions is the problem, note the exact screen and installed build when comparing it with update notes. This guide has not reproduced every current controller behaviour, so it does not claim that the old limitations remain unchanged or that all of them have been fixed.
Unintended movement and the 0.6.39 fixes
Patch 0.6.39 addressed cases where unrecognised devices were interpreted as analogue input, causing unintended forward or backward movement. The notes also describe a controller softlock after entering character selection, returning to the title screen and then being unable to start another run.
Update an older installation before diagnosing the same symptoms against a launch-era thread. If a problem remains, record the controller and any other connected input hardware. A published fix identifies the class of problem addressed; it is not a guarantee that every peripheral combination has been tested.
Does this mean the game is Steam Deck Verified?
No. The Deck compatibility report checked on October 18, 2026 rates the game Unsupported and identifies graphics performance. Native controller support does not change that rating. Reports for SteamOS on other hardware or for Steam Machine should not be substituted for the Deck-specific result.
The Deck page explains that rating and the older developer suggestions for touch, trackpad and stick interaction. This site has not measured a frame-rate preset on Deck hardware, so it does not turn a control suggestion into a performance recommendation.
Make an input problem reproducible
Record the product, installed version, controller model and connection method, then name the screen where the action fails. Describe whether menus, card selection, target selection or movement are affected. Include the expected action and the result rather than treating all input symptoms as one issue.
Keep those details with any device or layout settings you already tested. The developer uses the Steam Bug Reports forum for reproducible issues. Deleting a save or disabling unrelated system devices is not part of the confirmed game update; the useful first distinction is between a version difference and a repeatable input problem.
Compare a device or platform before buying
For a computer purchase, compare the platform requirements with your hardware. For Nintendo Switch, use the separate availability answer: an input feature does not announce a port. The platform hub connects those questions without treating all handhelds or controllers as the same product.
Frequently asked questions
Is controller support the same in the Demo and Early Access?
The September 13 developer explanation says the Demo was built before controller implementation was completed for Early Access. Check which product and version you launched before comparing controls.
Does the 0.6.39 input fix make the game Deck Verified?
No. An input fix and Valve’s hardware compatibility rating are separate. The Deck report checked on October 18, 2026 remains Unsupported for graphics performance.
