The game available on Steam
Shroom and Gloom entered Steam Early Access on September 10, 2026, for Windows and macOS. Team Lazerbeam develops the game, and Devolver Digital publishes it. The setting is a strange underground world presented from a first-person perspective, with hand-drawn creatures and scenery arranged inside three-dimensional spaces. Its fungal inhabitants are central to both the atmosphere and the way a run unfolds.
Early Access describes a playable release that is still in development. It does not mean that the full game has reached version 1.0. This overview describes the launch offering checked on September 13, 2026; later updates can change its scope. The current Steam listing and official announcements are the places to check for subsequent changes.
Combat and exploration use separate decks
The game divides its card play between a combat deck and an explore deck. Combat cards are used during encounters, while explore cards support the journey between fights. Together, the two decks connect the immediate problem of surviving an enemy with the longer process of developing a run. Understanding that split is a useful starting point before comparing individual cards.
Cards can grow and be modified as you progress. Enemies also have a role beyond being obstacles: cooking and eating them can restore health. These systems make the relationship between fighting, recovery and card development part of the central loop. This introduction establishes those broad mechanics without assuming a particular card combination, damage value or optimal strategy.
Five characters and two paths
The Early Access launch includes five playable characters: Paperboy, Janitor, Lunchlady, Activist and Concerned Parent. They have different starting decks. Being part of the playable cast does not mean every character is available at the beginning: quests unlock additional characters and expand the available choices.
Two paths are included in this release. The Mysterious Facility is part of that offering and is opened through quests. A planned additional path belongs to future development, rather than the content counted here. Keeping that distinction clear helps explain the difference between a feature described in development plans and something already included in the released game.
Keep the version in view
Older prototype footage can be useful background, but it should not automatically be treated as documentation for the Steam Early Access build. When comparing a video, a card description or an unlock explanation with your own run, check which version it describes. This page is a starting reference for the released game's structure; exact card interactions and unlock requirements need their own current evidence before becoming detailed walkthroughs.
