Shroom and Gloom Guide: Your First Run

Learn how combat and exploration fit together in Shroom and Gloom, then use a short first-run learning sequence to read cards, evaluate upgrades and think about recovery.

Explore cards in front of a locked dungeon door in Shroom and Gloom.

Start with the two-deck loop

Shroom and Gloom separates fighting from exploration into two decks. Your combat deck handles encounters; your explore deck helps you travel and develop your cards between fights. For a first run, learn how those two jobs connect before chasing a complicated combination.

A first-run learning sequence

Begin by reading the cards you actually have. Identify what can help in a fight and what belongs to exploration. This is a suggested learning order, rather than a fixed sequence of rooms or a complete route to the ending.

In an encounter, compare the effect printed on each card with the problem in front of you. Between encounters, look for opportunities to improve that plan through exploration. When a run goes badly, pick one decision to revisit: the attack you chose, the card you developed, or the recovery opportunity you missed. Keeping the question small makes the next attempt easier to learn from.

Evaluate upgrades in the context of your deck

Cards can be modified and grown during a run. Rather than judging an upgrade in isolation, ask which of your current cards it helps and when you expect to use it. An effect that looks impressive is only useful if you can put it to work. Re-read a card after modifying it so that your next decision uses its current effect.

Keep recovery in your plan

Cooking and eating enemies can restore health. Treat recovery as something to consider alongside damage, rather than assuming every encounter is only a race to attack. Read the requirements of the cards in your hand; the existence of cooking does not mean every attack automatically heals you.

Read the current card, not an old screenshot

When a guide and your screen disagree, use the text shown in your installed version. Keep the version difference in mind before assuming that you have missed an unlock.
